A Floatation tank is a dark, soundproof tank with a foot or less of saline water within. John C. Lilly, an American physician, and neurologist built the first tank in 1954. By blocking out all extraneous stimuli, he built the tank to research the beginnings of consciousness. In the 1960s, his study took a controversial turn. That’s when he started experimenting with sensory deprivation while under the influence of hallucinogens like LSD and ketamine, a fast-acting anesthetic that may sedate and induce a trance-like condition.
